Helpful answers before you start

What is a good typing speed?

A useful target depends on what you type and why. For an employment test, follow the employer's stated speed, accuracy and test-duration requirements. For personal practice, compare your own results on similar text and the same keyboard. Record accuracy alongside WPM: a higher speed with more errors is not automatically a better result.

How long does it take to learn touch typing?

There is no fixed timetable. Your starting habits, keyboard familiarity and practice all affect progress. Begin with the home row, add new keys gradually and use short sessions you can repeat comfortably. You may slow down while changing technique. Measure progress by finding keys more reliably and making fewer mistakes, as well as by WPM.

How is WPM calculated?

A word is defined as five characters, including spaces. WPM is (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed. Counting real space-separated words instead would make your score depend on whether the text used long or short words rather than on your typing. Raw WPM uses the same formula over every character you typed, right or wrong.

Is Typometer free?

Yes. All 470 lessons, the typing test, the practice mode and all 16 typing games are free, with no account required to start. An account only adds saved progress and long-term statistics.

Which finger types which key?

On a standard US QWERTY keyboard, rest your left fingers on A, S, D and F and your right fingers on J, K, L and semicolon. Use a thumb for the space bar. The index fingers cover more than one column, so use the finger-placement chart for the full mapping. The raised marks on F and J help you find the home row without looking.

Does typing practice actually work?

Practice gives you opportunities to build familiarity with the keyboard. Make it specific: notice a recurring error, choose a matching exercise, and check whether that error becomes less frequent. Typometer's lesson and test results can help you choose what to practise. Finger-group feedback uses the recommended key mapping; it does not detect which finger you actually used.

Why does my accuracy not improve when I use backspace?

Because accuracy here counts keystrokes, not the final text. Backspace repairs what is on screen but the mistake still happened. An accuracy score you could rescue by correcting would reward heavy backspacing and hide the exact weakness worth training.

Can a website tell which finger I used?

No, and any site claiming to detect it is guessing. A browser reports which character was typed, never which finger pressed it. What a site can do is teach the correct finger for each key and refuse to advance when the wrong key is pressed, which is what the lessons here do.
